"immigrants take our jobs"
« on: November 13, 2009, 02:59:38 am »
just recently saw some people being interviewed for the news on how immigrants affect their ability to get a job, and the thought occurred to me : would these be the same people who couldn't be bothered in school to get a decent education and now complain in a roundabout way that they're unemployable ?

Most of our jobs went abroad. Doesn't make sense for immigrants to come here.

I would think it still makes sense for immigrants to move to the USA for work. There is likely competition for work where they immigrate from, even for the new job's outsourced. All the outsourced jobs might even be worked on by imported people from even poorer countries than the country the jobs are outsourced to, or they may be worked by slave labor. An immigrant to the USA will be willing to work harder, longer, and cheaper than your average "lazy, fat, dumb" American. Not saying all American's are "lazy, fat, dumb", but I definitely know there are lots of them.

it's just that i see a discrepancy between some people saying there's no jobs and recruiters saying there's not suitable candidates to fill the vacancies, so they have draft in people from abroad

and we overeducated a large percentage of the population making it impossible for them to find a job.

They are currently turning many schools into 'universities'. It's ... insane.

What's the point?

They are not even doing research or pretending to do so.

that's already happened in the UK - polytechnics have become universities, so that the government could reach its target of getting a certain percentage of the population into university

add to that an annual fee of £3000 for the privilege and before you're even ready for the job market you're at least £9000 (+ interest) in debt

total madness

Its true, immigrants do take jobs. Usually its because they are willing to work longer hours for less, so employers love them. Like outsourcing, from a companies point of view its all about saving money.

Immigrants also often come from parts of the world that value education & studies very highly, because they recognise it as a path to a better life. In the UK, education (or at least the importance of it from the point of view of parents) for some reason is lowering standards. That is, people take for granted the opportunities for learning or simply dont recognise the opportunities they have.

So yes, those that messed around in school, were disruptive and generally pissed away their education are now finding themselves on the bottom of the employability scale. Then they see imingrants and get angry when they get jobs. Some precive immigrants to be poorly educated (partly due to their accent/English speaking ability) and wonder why they got the job.

mind you the thought HAS occurred to me : could MY job be outsourced to Tata IT in the foreseeable future ? presumably all the more reason for sticking with the local production IT support rather than venture into corporate IT

Some IT stuff can easily, and often is outsourced. India is very good for outsourcing programming projects to. If you need a program or software solution India is the place to go. There are many very good programmers there, and they will do it for cheaper.

the main complication being that Tata is now our parent company, so in a way it's not even outsourcing

So it's expansion, mainstreaming/smooth lining, and/or minimizing?

re-allocation of resources to the parent company
