the "infallible seducer" paradox
« on: January 24, 2010, 04:53:45 pm »
it seems this one is a fairly ancient paradox which goes a bit like this:

the seducer asks 2 questions of a woman :

1. will you give the same answer to this question as to the next ?
2. will you go to bed with me ?

and the stipulation is that only yes/no answers are allowed
given those conditions, the answer to #2 will always have to be "yes"

however, in the real world things wouldn't work out quite as logic seems to dictate, mainly for 2 reasons :

1. most people would not want to give a clear yes or no to #1, the most likely answer being "it depends"
2. even if people have been logically cornered doesn't mean they will go along with the logical conclusion if it doesn't match what they really want to do

in short paradoxes often arise from the use of absolutes rather than the shades of grey that world usually consists of
"I don't have to know an answer. I don't feel frightened by not knowing things; by being lost in a mysterious universe without any purpose — which is the way it really is, as far as I can tell, possibly. It doesn't frighten me." ~ Richard Feynman
"One should always strive to make things as simple as possible - but no simpler" ~ Albert Einstein
"Tiny minds need to shrink the grand concepts of the universe until they fit the size of their tiny mind"

yeah honestly, who'd actually go like "alright you got me there... let's go fuck even though i don't want to... after all I've given you me word"...
If there is no possibility of failure, then victory is meaningless.

Some people were thought to be brave just because they were too craven to run!

ἓν οἶδα ὅτι οὐδὲν οἶδα - I know that I know nothing

Δεν ελπίζω τίποτα. Δε φοβʊμαι τίποτα. Είμαι λεύτερος. - I hope nothing. I fear nothing. I am free.
