the following statements in the England vs. America thread look like a good topic for a debate

spuriousmonkey : Carl sagan has a christian agenda. I don't like that.
KillaThon : Sagan didnt have a Christian agenda.

over to you gents
"I don't have to know an answer. I don't feel frightened by not knowing things; by being lost in a mysterious universe without any purpose — which is the way it really is, as far as I can tell, possibly. It doesn't frighten me." ~ Richard Feynman
"One should always strive to make things as simple as possible - but no simpler" ~ Albert Einstein
"Tiny minds need to shrink the grand concepts of the universe until they fit the size of their tiny mind"

This is what he would have sounded like if he was a Christian:

Well, I assumed Carl wasn't raised as a christian, jew or any other religious faction than christianity. So I might be wrong about the specific cult, but it is hardly a secret he incorporated religious connotations, references, and themes in his work whenever possible.

As evidence I put forward the novel written by this "objective" gentleman, called contact. If that isn't a piece of religious propaganda then I don't know what is.

The theme of the book is that the universe was created by a creator.

Carl Sagan is like Hitler, yet unlike him in many ways.

Political tags - such as royalist, communist, democrat, populist, fascist, liberal, conservative, and so forth - are never basic criteria. The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire.

Depends on if you are happy with the outcome.

We probably would each have to have a copy of the work in question and throw quotes at each other underlined with interpretations.

However, I did own a copy of contact once, but threw it away because I knew I would never read this piece of crap again in my life.

I was sorely disappointed with it because of the religious ending.

hence I remember.

never felt the inclination to read Sagan's "Contact"
being an SF fan of the old school, i probably had some foreboding about a novel by Sagan - it would either be sci-fi or a didactic work pretending to be a novel
