There is no good and evil.
« on: February 28, 2010, 12:45:10 pm »
Quote from: J. K. Rowling
There is no good and evil, there is only power, and those too weak to seek it.

so, what do you guys think about that?
If there is no possibility of failure, then victory is meaningless.

Some people were thought to be brave just because they were too craven to run!

ἓν οἶδα ὅτι οὐδὲν οἶδα - I know that I know nothing

Δεν ελπίζω τίποτα. Δε φοβʊμαι τίποτα. Είμαι λεύτερος. - I hope nothing. I fear nothing. I am free.

nice sound bite, but i doubt whether it really reflects reality

pretty much the way i see it too. a lot of evil seeks power, but im good and look to attain a great deal of power.

that's just your definition of good an evil though, innit? can't a world work without the very concept of a good side and a bad side?

why do people apply a binary paradigm to something that has a complexity that makes advanced calculus look like taking a fart in a bath?

that always boggles me brains.

I s'ppose that with an infinite number of binary I/0 decisions / descriptions every shade on the scale can be described?

so we talking defining evil and good by intent or by action? which takes more precedence? if the action is evil but the intent was good..which describes the situation overall?

is evil defined by being self serving? but what if serving one's self(CAKE! nom) serves to benefit others?

what about taking the "tough love" approach to someone? a parent kicking their kid out to get a message across...gag...this sort of mental mushing makes my brain ooze...i need to drink a zombie and get back to you...

mmmmm...zombies.....

to come back to the reality of good and evil : no-one that i know of is 100% good or 100% evil
we're all a mixture + often the definitions of what constitutes good or evil varies from person to person

It's a continuum. Like the electromagnetic spectrum. Red is different from orange, but the dividing line is only an opinion.

so it's just what? discussing semantics? or opinions?

to my eyes its both.

to a fundamentalist muslim, eating pig= sin bad evil wrong

to me= YAY BACON!!! nom nom nom

good and evil are highly subjective and mostly founded in the self interest of the defining person or group.  to reach a conclusion as to objective morality would be a monumentally impossible task.

i kind of think in of it in terms of Low Impact vs High Impact.

having a low impact in a negative sense is good, having a high impact in a positive sense is good.  and there are degrees and variations of both.

the fact there's many shades of grey between black and white doesn't mean that black equates white
likewise for good and evil - there's a clear distinction even if in many cases there's a load of halfway houses

but where does the concept of good and evil come from? What do we need it for?
